Studio movies of 2011 & 2012

So, we now have the complete list of 2011 films. Here’s my round-up of the genre/sci-fi and animated movies from the major studios and film-makers…

Unwatchable:

Battle: Los Angeles

Generally dire:

Tintin
Mars Needs Moms
Rio

Very forgettable:

Transformers: Dark of the Moon
X-Men: First Class
Thor
Green Lantern
Cars 2

Entertaining but essentially forgettable:

Rango
Cowboys and Aliens
Conan
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Three Musketeers

Excellent:

Source Code
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (my ‘movie of the year’, so far)

Not yet seen:

The Artist
Arthur Christmas Now seen: entertaining
Hugo Now seen: a masterpiece
Another Earth
Super 8
Midnight in Paris
Atlas Shrugged: Part 1
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows Now seen: forgettable

(British drama -wise I’m also very much looking forward to The Iron Lady, which I hope be as utterly magnificent as The King’s Speech. The outstanding documentary of 2011 for me was Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams, on the earliest cave-paintings.)

Coming up in 2012 and of note in animation, genre and sci-fi we have: Miyazaki’s The Borrower Arrietty in the Disney English-language dub version; John Carter of Mars; The Avengers; Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter; a Spiderman reboot (yawn…); Prometheus, in which Ridley Scott returns to science fiction; another try at filming the Judge Dredd comic; and The Hobbit next Xmas.
